The Birds of Needs Ore

UPDATE – The Birds of Needs Ore by Chris Button is now available. Please see The Birds of Needs Ore

The Birds of Needs Ore will be published in 2024 and will include a systematic review of all of the 260 species that have been seen here including records from 1945 to 2023. It will provide a baseline for the current populations, a detailed breeding analysis for the many key species and an analysis of the long term declining numbers of the wildfowl and waders that use the reserve.

The book will include an annual summary of the birds you can expect to see throughout each of the four seasons and a calendar of the rarities that have been recorded over the years. It will also include a ‘tour of the reserve’, a summary of the history and habitats on the site and some notes on how the reserve is managed. It will be designed and produced by Dan Powell who has delivered several similar projects in Hampshire previously. All of the many photos are taken on the reserve with some of the species having watercolour field sketches.

The following pages are examples from the draft texts, they have not been through the design process yet and so they look a little untidy but they do give you an idea of the book content.
