Slavonian Grebe – Hill Head, Hampshire

On Boxing day I ventured out for the first time with my new Kowa 883 Scope. I decided to visit Hill Head where 2 Slavonian Grebes had been loitering off shore for a few days.

I parked at the sailing club and walked out to the sea wall. The conditions were so flat calm that picking them out was very simple and I had great views as they drifted close in shore.

Compared to Black-necked Grebes they are smarter with a more clearly demarcated black cap, a flatter crown and a less fluffed up rear end.
