Large relatively slow moving birds are easier to sketch although feeding Little Egrets do tend to keep on the move more so than Grey Herons and Great White Egrets which often freeze in position ready to strike.
While the Egret preened I managed to capture some different poses.

To give the bird a feeling of 3 dimensions it’s useful to be able to sketch in some shadow areas and I find shadow violet (from Daniel Smith) is a great pigment for this as it has a cool temperature, like shadows, but has a bit more life to it than a straight grey mix. Seeing where the shadows lie is easier on a bright sunny day like today.
